Traveling Surg Tech Couple Reaches Goals on the Open Road Part II

This enthusiastic team tells us why traveling was a career choice that totally worked for them.
Mike and Jennifer M., who we met earlier , are a traveling surgical tech couple with a passion for their work and for travel. They have been traveling the country with their two adorable Dachshunds, Dodger and Daisy, and are currently on a travel job in Texas. Here’s a little more of their insight into a travel nurse career!

Travel CST Goals

When asked about the goals Mike and Jennifer wished to accomplish while traveling, they gave answers that were hardly surprising after getting to know them a little!
“Just to see as much as possible,” says Mike, “go everywhere,” says Jennifer.
They do have two specific locations in mind for the future: Hawaii and Alaska. According to Jennifer, those are their dream destinations, but there are many places across the U.S. that they still want to see.

Finding the Right Recruiter and Right Allied Travel Agency

We all know how important it is to find a recruiter you connect with and trust. Mike and Jennifer had high praise for their recruiter, Ember.
“Ember is right on the money. She keeps up with us and goes above and beyond.” - Mike
“Ember is just on top of things. She fights for us with assignments. If we have a question, she’s there.” - Jennifer
They went on to say that when you’re on the road, it’s important to know that someone is advocating for you and making sure you’re taken care of.
“A good recruiter is kind of like having a family member you haven’t really met. They’re a person you can always reach out to.” - Mike
On the same note, they said that transparency is important to them in a travel nursing company.
“Our contacts at American Traveler are straight shooters. I like that.” - Mike

Is Traveling Worth It?

Mike and Jennifer had no inhibitions telling nurses and surgical techs considering travel careers that they should go for it. Mike expressed that his only regret is that he didn’t know about the possibility of being a travel CST earlier. Both had a little advice for those considering taking the leap.
“Don’t be scared. Get out there and do it. I know it’s a really big step, leaving your job. But everybody accepts you [as you travel], and you find family everywhere you go.” - Jennifer
“It feels like you’re giving up a lot, but you can have time off. It’s totally up to you. You can jump straight into another assignment or take time to breathe. We just took off six weeks between Reno and Kentucky to spend time with my mom. I think kids need to get out there and do this.” - Mike
As much as the two love the adventure of being travel surg techs, they also see other perks to the travel lifestyle.
“You get burnout doing the same job day in and day out. But being a traveler, you get something new and exciting every job you go to.” - Mike
