Cath Lab Technologists work in the field of cardiovascular technology. The CL Techs assist physicians during cardiovascular procedures like angioplasty, cardiac catheterization, and electrophysiology. In some cases the Cath Lab Tech will assist during an open heart surgery, with insertion of pacemakers or stents. Before the surgery they are responsible for checking and verifying that the EKG is working properly. They will also analyze the readouts and inform the doctor of any abnormalities. During the some surgical procedures, they are responsible for preparing the patients for the surgery.
