American Traveler is seeking an experienced Psychiatric RN for a 13-week night shift travel contract at an acute care hospital in Bismarck, ND, requiring a ND or compact RN license and a minimum of 2 years of inpatient psych experience.

Details

• Acute care psychiatric unit (locked unit) located on the 4th floor of the hospital — the only child/adolescent inpatient unit in the region
• Unit has 25 licensed beds, currently operating with 3 adult beds and 6 adolescent beds
• Patient population includes adolescents and adults with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse (alcohol and other substances), psychosis, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other behavioral or personality disorders; rare opioid withdrawal cases
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is 3:1 for adults (up to 7:1 possible) and 6:1 for adolescents
• Mental health techs/aides are available; up to 2 techs when the unit is at full capacity (9 patients)
• Multidisciplinary support includes occupational therapy (M–F), OT assistant, social work, and RT available in-house
• Mechanical restraints and seclusion used rarely; IV use is very rare
• No telemetry monitoring on this unit
• EMR: Epic
• 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a); self-scheduling based on seniority with manager balancing; block scheduling accommodated when possible
• Every other weekend required
• Every other holiday required
• Travelers are first to float throughout the hospital, typically as helping hands or 1:1s
• No on-call or standby requirement
• 13-week contract

Requirements

• Active ND or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
• Minimum 2 years of acute/inpatient psychiatric or state hospital RN experience required
• Current BLS certification required; pending certifications not accepted
• CHI Health Workplace Violence Prevention certification required
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification preferred
• Adolescent psychiatric experience preferred
• Strong de-escalation and communication skills required
• A driver's license must be provided for consideration
• 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

Additional Information

• Nurses are expected to be actively involved in patient care, including assisting with 15-minute safety rounds — not a sit-at-the-station role
• Unit uses emergency buttons for code blue, in-hospital security, and code yellow for extra staff support
• Scrub color: any color except maroon; business casual attire also acceptable
• Unit orientation consists of 2 x 12-hour shifts
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
• Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates placed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
• RTO of 7 days or fewer per 13-week contract must be declared upfront; additional RTO will not be approved
• A manager interview is required as part of the selection process
