American Traveler seeks a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) for a hospital Surgical Services position focused on orthopedic and cardiothoracic cases, working Monday through Friday days with call requirements.

Details

• Hospital-based surgical services department with 15 OR suites, including hybrid and cardiothoracic suites, plus PACU, sterile supply, and pharmacy support areas
• Orthopedic and cardiothoracic surgical patient population, including saphenous vein harvesting and other complex procedures
• First shift schedule, Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
• On-call requirement of one night per week and every third weekend
• 40 hours per week, 8-hour shifts, 5 days per week
• 13-week contract

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program or comparable military training required
• Completion of a Surgical First Assistant Program required
• NBSTSA Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential required
• BLS certification required
• License required if applicable
• 6–12 months of experience preferred; no minimum experience required

Additional Information

• Assist the surgeon as chief assistant in the operating room, including passing instruments, clamping, cauterizing, tying, applying ligating clamps, hemostatic clips, and hemostatic agents
• Applies running or interrupted sutures on wound layers including muscle, fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin
• First assists in cardiothoracic and other surgical procedures, including open and endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting upon completion of an approved course
• Assists with case setup by ensuring all instruments and sterile supplies are available, thoroughly sterilized, and properly organized
• Maintains the sterile field throughout case setup and the duration of the procedure
• Alerts the circulating nurse of any identified risks or deviations from standard operating procedures
• Assists with patient positioning and sterile draping
• Supports circulating RN duties as needed
• Performs post-case cleaning, including point-of-use instrument cleaning and breakdown for Central Sterile Processing
• Follows all standards for instrument transport and return to Central Sterile, and reports any damaged instruments to the appropriate leader
• Ensures the surgical suite is disinfected and ready for the next procedure
• Role is part of an expanding orthopedic team within a coordinated, high-quality surgical care department
• Supervised by the department director and nurse manager, with assignments received from the charge nurse or RN in charge of the room
