American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit position requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and a ME or compact RN license.

• Night shift position: 7P–7A, 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
• Freestanding acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away
• Pediatric psychiatric unit serving patients ages 5–18, with floating required to the adult psychiatric unit (ages 18+/geriatric)
• Pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria
• Adult diagnoses commonly include schizophrenia, MDD, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, anxiety, and occasionally substance use disorder/CIWA patients (medically cleared)
• All patients are medically cleared upon admission; lines, drains, and tubes are not typical
• Both voluntary and involuntary admissions; no forensic patients or inmates
• Seclusion rooms are available and used when necessary; chemical restraints are not used
• Night shift RN ratio: 1:13 with resource and nursing support; day shift ratio: 1:5–6
• Psych Tech support: Peds night – 2 Techs; Adult day – 2 Techs, night – 2 Techs
• Charting via Cerner; medications dispensed via Pyxis
• Every other weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday)
• No on-call requirements
• Holidays worked on a rotation basis

Requirements

• Active RN license — ME state license or compact license required
• Current BLS certification required
• Minimum 1 year of behavioral health (BH) nursing experience required; pediatric BH experience preferred
• Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints required
• Comfort with medication administration, group facilitation, and clinical documentation
• Candidates must have a permanent address 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility in Bangor, ME to qualify for the travel pay rate
• No previous permanent employment at any Northern Light Health Hospital
• 2 professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
• Full SSN, driver's license, and copies of all current certifications required for consideration
• Flu vaccination required for clearance

• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Candidates without pediatric BH experience may be considered with manager approval
• Orientation consists of the first week on day shift (Mon–Fri), followed by the second week on contracted night shift hours
• MOAB certification is obtained on-site during orientation; a MOAB educator/trainer is available on-site and scenario-based de-escalation training is offered every other week
• In escalation situations, a designated 'code leader' verbally de-escalates while assigning roles to other staff; travelers may be asked to serve as code leader; a debriefing form is completed after each incident
• Specialized therapies offered at the facility include pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens
• Support staff includes a nurse supervisor (evenings/weekends), nurse manager (days), house administrator (overnight/weekends), charge nurse, psych techs, contracted phlebotomist, NP (on-site until 1600, then on-call), psychiatrist (daily rounds and on-call 0000–0600), and occupational therapist (0800–1630, 7 days/week)
• Travelers may have the opportunity to serve as charge nurse, though it is not required
