American Traveler is seeking an experienced Surgical Technologist with a minimum of 3 years of OR experience, including Trauma Level I and neurosurgery, for a 13-week travel contract at an acute care Magnet hospital in Springfield, IL.

Details

• Work setting is an acute care Magnet hospital with a Level I trauma center and teaching hospital designation
• High-volume OR environment averaging 50–60 cases per day
• Cases span a broad range of specialties including general surgery, ENT, endoscopy, gynecology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, plastics, urology, oral surgery, and trauma
• Day shift, 5x8 hours (6:45 AM – 3:15 PM)
• Weekend obligation is once per month totaling 16 hours
• On-call required as needed for the department
• Floating within scope of practice is required, including potential float to affiliate hospitals
• Charting system is Cerner
• Scrubs are provided

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of OR surgical technologist experience required, with at least 2 years of recent (within the past 3 years) acute care/trauma-level facility experience — outpatient experience does not count toward this requirement
• Trauma Level I experience required
• Neurosurgery experience required, including cases such as craniotomy, laminectomy/discectomy, and lumbar fusion
• Prior travel experience required; first-time travelers will not be considered
• BLS certification required (AHA or Red Cross only; RQI cards not accepted)
• CST preferred
• Candidates must live more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
• Must arrive in IL at least 3 business days prior to the assignment start date to complete fingerprinting requirements
• License required if applicable
• SSN and DOB required for consideration
• The following required skills must all be demonstrated — candidates missing any are not eligible: ENT (direct laryngoscopy, radical neck dissection, tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy, tracheostomy), endoscopic procedures (colonoscopy, EGD, PEG tube placement/exchange), general surgery (appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colon resection open/lap, hernia repair, laparoscopic assisted procedures, mastectomy, thyroidectomy), gynecology (abdominal hysterectomy, anterior/posterior repair, bilateral tubal ligation, D&C, laparoscopic gynecological procedures, vaginal hysterectomy), neurosurgery (craniotomy, laminectomy/discectomy, lumbar fusion), oral surgery (repair of fractured jaws, mandibular and zygomatic), orthopedics (arthroscopy, arthrotomy, carpal tunnel release, closed/open reduction of fractures, laminectomy/discectomy), plastics (free flap - microvascular), trauma (amputations, gunshot/stab wounds, MVA with multiple injuries), urology (cystoscopy, laparoscopic assisted cases, nephrectomy, ureteroscopy)
• Required professional skills include aseptic technique, isolation precautions/PPE, radiation safety, sharps safety, specimen handling/labeling, and universal protocol (time out) procedure
• Required equipment experience includes drills (multiple types), electrosurgical units, and fiber optic light sources/cords
• Fire safety knowledge required

Additional Information

• Former permanent or PRN employees of Memorial must have been away from the facility for at least 12 months before applying as a traveler
• Candidate must work 2 out of 3 major holidays; up to 5 days of non-holiday RTO may be approved without facility review, but larger RTO requests require manager approval
• All time off requests must be submitted at the time of initial application
• Orientation includes completion of online modules, which must be finished by 4:00 PM CST on the first day of the assignment; the first day is a virtual at-home day
• Free parking is available on-site via a permit obtained during orientation
• Cerner charting system experience is position-specific; familiarity is recommended
• Teaching hospital experience is preferred
